“Claire Willowes”

As a young adult and growing up I saw a bit of Claire Willowes artworks here and there. She signed everything “C.W.”.   So, as far as I knew, C.W. was the artists name, and I didn’t know if C.W. was a man or woman.

Recently I’ve discovered C.W. was really Claire Willowes, and the majority of her art was produced in the late 1940’s and early 1950’s.  It certainly has a late 1940’s feel to it.

The “Gale – Girl Reporter” series was purchased from Irving Klaw in his New York store back in 1953.

Now I find out that there was an artist named “Claire Willowes”, and a different artist named “C.W.” “Claire Willowes” was the pen-name of the man who wrote certain 1930’s BDSM epics such as “Happy Tears, later re-written (and greatly changed).

“C.W.” was a female artist, and she was Irving Klaw’s sister-in-law. Her output included “Zaza’s Perilous Adventure”, “Gail, Girl Reporter” and “Miss Adventure”.

If anyone has more details on this artist, I would certainly appreciate the information.
